MyMathTest Program Scenarios

MyMathTest is a flexible tool that your math department can take advantage of in several ways. The following scenarios illustrate some of the ways MyMathTest can be used to help your students refresh their knowledge or to help you place them in the correct course.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use MyMathTest as a short Refresher course?

Your department can set up a refresher program to provide a quick and easy-to-use resource for students who need to review concepts but don’t need to take a full course. Refresher programs are ideal for students who have already learned the material but need to brush up before taking any math course. MyMathTest includes concepts from basic math through precalculus.

Our sample shows how a refresher program might be designed. Students take pretests and their results populate their individual Study Plans, showing the concepts that they need to review. Students then work in their Study Plans to refresh their knowledge.

In our sample program, each pretest (except the first) requires a prerequisite score of 80% on the previous pretest, ensuring that students achieve mastery of the concepts. (Prerequisites and mastery are determined by your program manager.) The following flowchart shows how the sample program helps students refresh their knowledge.

How do I use MyMathTest to improve the accuracy of my current Placement test?

After your students receive an initial placement based on their scores on your institutions’ national standardized assessment test (such as COMPASS, ASSET, ACT, or AccuPlacer), your department or course advisors can use MyMathTest placement programs to ensure student placements are appropriate. Your department selects the test items, so your MyMathTest placement programs will be correlated to the curriculum and pedagogical philosophy used in your math courses.

Depending on how you organize your placement program, students may be allowed to improve their placement recommendation by working in their Study Plan prior to or in conjunction with taking the placement tests. This option helps students just beginning their college math studies.

Our two sample placement programs assess students’ knowledge in Developmental Math and in Precalculus. We assume that students have taken a standardized placement test (such as COMPASS) and have been placed into a math course based on those results. In our sample MyMathTest placement programs, students start with the lowest-level placement test to ensure that they have mastered the required prerequisite knowledge. Our sample programs allow students to take each placement test twice; students who score 80% or higher advance to the next placement test. After two attempts, if students can’t achieve an 80% score, they would be enrolled in the math class for that level. (The number of attempts, prerequisites, and mastery would be determined by your program manager.)

How do I use MyMathTest as a Test Prep tool for students at any level?

Your department or college assessment department can set up a test preparation program for students at all levels from basic math through calculus. You can make MyMathTest available to students before they take the standardized placement test as part of your college’s entrance process. Placement programs could also be made available to students who need a resource to study for the math portion of standardized tests such as the GRE, MCAT, LSAT, or GMAT.

Your department or testing specialist can set up programs with tests that model the national standardized assessment tests used at your campus (such as COMPASS, ACT, AccuPlacer, CPT, or THEA). Students self-select the appropriate placement test and then work on their own in their individualized Study Plan to improve their skills and understanding of concepts prior to taking their standardized placement test.
